Overview

Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, physical exhibitions became inaccessible to the public. This proposal explored how an exhibition experience could be translated into a browser-based virtual space, allowing visitors to freely explore content while preserving the sense of discovery found in a physical museum.

Working within a one-week proposal timeline, the objective was to communicate the concept through high-fidelity mockups that demonstrated both the visitor journey and the interaction model for stakeholders.

The Project

Squeezing Elements

  • Designing the overall interaction flow and visitor journey

  • Creating interface mockups and interaction concepts

  • Establishing the project's visual language and UI system

  • Preparing presentation-ready assets for stakeholder review

Spatial Design

Although the experience was browser-based, the proposal remained grounded in the physical layout of the library.

Using the real exhibition floorplan and a site visit (adhering to safety measures)helped shape and communicate how visitors would naturally progress through the space while understanding where digital interactions would occur.

Visual Language

The visual language intentionally complemented the exhibition instead of competing with it.

  • Warm paper textures reflected archival materials.

  • Muted earth tones reinforced the environmental history theme.

  • Teal accents highlighted interactive elements and guided user attention.

This ensured calls-to-action remained visible while preserving the exhibition's atmosphere.

Interaction System

Rather than introducing unfamiliar controls, each interaction used patterns commonly found across modern websites and digital products.

The interaction model consisted of:

  • 360° Navigation

  • Interactive Hotspots

  • Artifact Viewer

  • Video Stories

  • Audio Narration

This reduced cognitive load while allowing users to focus on the exhibition rather than learning the interface.

The Challenge

Unlike designing a conventional website experience, this proposal aimed to recreate the feeling of moving through a physical exhibition.

Several constraints shaped the design:

  • The proposal needed to communicate the complete experience within an A4 presentation format.

  • Visitors had to navigate naturally despite interacting entirely through a web browser.

  • The interface needed to remain secondary to the exhibition itself, allowing the actual historical content to remain the primary focus.

  • Every interaction had to be understandable without guidance, using familiar web conventions and minimal learning.

Reflection

This project marked the first time I designed beyond a single interface and began thinking about the relationship between digital experiences, physical environments, and user behaviour.

Looking back, this proposal was my first introduction to systems thinking in UX. Although the deliverable was a concept rather than a shipped product, it challenged me to think beyond individual screens and instead design an experience that connected navigation, interaction, storytelling, and physical space into a cohesive user journey.
That mindset has continued to shape how I approach player-facing systems today, particularly when translating complex ideas into intuitive experiences.

Several lessons I've picked up on

  • Designing around technical constraints rather than after them.

  • Understanding physical spaces before translating them into digital experiences.

  • Using familiar interaction patterns to reduce friction.

  • Communicating concepts clearly enough for stakeholders to visualise an experience before development begins.
