The Challenge

Understanding the physical environment

Unlike traditional digital products, the experience had to fit naturally within a physical retail environment where users were encountering the installation for the first time.

The design needed to:

  • Minimise onboarding time while keeping users engaged.

  • Guide interactions clearly without requiring staff assistance.

  • Complement the campaign's premium visual identity rather than compete with it.

  • Work within hardware constraints provided by the engineering team.

This project also became my first opportunity to independently own a client-facing UI project while working under senior design mentorship.

My Approach

Three principles guided every decision:

Simplicity

Users should understand the interaction within seconds. Reducing the need to be attended to by front-facing customer service and technical support.

Consistency

Every screen should reinforce Clé de Peau Beauté's luxury branding and existing campaign visuals.

Context

Interfaces needed to account for physical constraints such as user positioning, hardware dimensions, and interaction distance.

Designing the Experience

Decision

Reason

Large touch targets

Users interacted while standing and often only briefly engaged with the installation.

Bottom-aligned CTAs

More comfortable reach based on booth dimensions and average user height.

Minimal text

Reduce cognitive load and maintain flow.

Motion illustrations

Reinforce instructions without relying solely on written guidance.

Consistent visual language

Maintain alignment with Clé de Peau Beauté's premium campaign identity.

Objective

Provide a quick, intuitive redemption experience that guided users from product discovery to reward collection.

Landing → QR Scan → Dispensing → Dispensing → Collection Tutorial → Campaign Landing Page

Help users quickly understand a gesture-based game without relying solely on verbal instructions.

Developing the game - taking it from the initial proposed points system based on movement to a beat into a movement into filling a bottle which revealed the product to customers. This proposed change took some convincing to stakeholders and tested much better in the crowded mall environment.

Design considerations:

  • Visual cues

  • Body positioning

  • Progress feedback

  • Large readable graphics

  • Immediate feedback

Constraints

Physical Space

The booth size meant users naturally stood closer to the display, similarly to a vending machine

This influenced CTA placement and typography sizing.

Hardware

UI layouts had to accommodate portrait displays and parameters defined by the hardware/software team.

Branding

Every interaction needed to feel like part of the premium retail experience rather than a standalone game.

Reflection

A new experience and first time on my own.

This project introduced me to designing beyond the screen. Every interface decision was influenced not only by usability but also by physical space, hardware constraints, and the pace of a real-world retail environment.

It reinforced the importance of considering context as part of the user experience.
